The universe of No Man’s Sky is about to get a serious mobile upgrade. After a decade of epic exploration, the developers at Hello Games are bringing the sprawling survival experience to iOS, marking a major milestone for one of gaming’s most beloved franchises.

The highly anticipated mobile launch is slated for October 28th, and the journey to this point was anything but easy. Porting a massive, complex universe-generating game onto a handheld device presented a daunting technical challenge. As developer Sean Murray recalls, the team initially wondered if it was even possible to run the game on an iPhone.

But they didn’t just meet the challenge; they redefined what’s possible. Murray noted that seeing the game’s universe generation working smoothly on a small screen was a core memory, highlighting the magical feeling of seeing infinite space being crafted on a tiny device.

Hello Games assures players that this is not a scaled-down version. The mobile launch will feature the complete universe, including all the massive content updates that have enriched the game over the years, such as the Cosmos update and the celebrated Voyagers.

To ensure a seamless experience, the team didn’t cut corners on performance or control. They completely rebuilt the touch controls from the ground up to make No Man’s Sky feel intuitive and comfortable on mobile. Furthermore, significant effort was dedicated to optimizing battery life and thermodynamics, ensuring that exploration doesn’t drain the device in one fell swoop.

The technical feat is further underscored by the game’s impressive efficiency. The file size of the mobile version is surprisingly small, clocking in under 5GB, meaning players can dive into the cosmos without stressing about storage limitations.

While the game will not feature multiplayer or settlements on launch day, the focus remains squarely on pure exploration. It will be accessible on a range of iOS devices, specifically starting with the iPhone 11 and third-generation iPad Air and up.

In an effort to welcome as many new Travellers to the universe as possible, Hello Games plans to offer the mobile version free to try at launch. Pre-orders are currently live, allowing players to secure their spot for this interstellar adventure.
