Paul Bettany found tapping into ruthless Vision in VisionQuest really fun
The MCU is about to get a fresh perspective, and it’s showing up in a surprising new direction with the second episode of VisionQuest. Forget the measured, logical android we are accustomed to; this Vision is embarking on a journey that pushes the boundaries of what we thought we knew about him.
The tension escalates quickly when Vision finds himself in a tense confrontation with Paladin in an Edinburgh pub. The scene is electric, revolving around Vision’s desperate attempt to manipulate his associate to turn himself in, all in the name of saving his supposed son, Tommy Shepherd.
But the real bombshell isn’t the action—it’s Vision’s revelation. In a rare display of raw power and violence, Vision warns Paladin that he is not the Avenger he believes himself to be. This moment shatters the established framework, introducing a layer of complexity and ruthlessness that the audience has never witnessed before.
This dramatic shift stems from the incredible performance of Paul Bettany, who has brought Vision to life for over a decade. Bettany shared that exploring this new facet of the character was a lot of “fun.” He noted that while Vision’s memories have been restored, he seems unable or unwilling to attach conventional feelings to them—a choice he describes as being “really human.”
The ability to see Vision grapple with anger and frustration in such visceral ways adds tremendous depth to his character. Bettany found it compelling to see Vision experience frustration in relatable, even funny, situations, such as a father struggling with a mundane task.
Showrunner Terry Matalas was thrilled by the results of this creative decision. He admitted that the moment Vision declares, “Let’s try something new,” delivered in such a dark manner, was extremely exciting. Matalas felt the audience would be thrilled to see Vision demonstrate this newly acquired, more ruthless side.
VisionQuest continues its weekly journey on Disney Plus, promising even more spectacular shenanigans. Based on the unfolding events, viewers are in for some truly unpredictable and entertaining episodes ahead, as the dynamic between Vision, Ultron, and Tommy continues to evolve.
