The State of Play: A Feast of Future Games and Frightening Adventures

Sony’s recent State of Play broadcasts delivered a spectacular showcase of what’s coming to the PlayStation ecosystem, moving beyond mere trailers to offer deep dives into ambitious projects and thrilling gameplay reveals. From massive cinematic action to deep RPG expansions, the lineup confirmed that the future of gaming is packed with high-octane thrills, historical adventures, and plenty of spooky surprises.

One of the biggest draws was the cinematic side of gaming, with the highly anticipated Final Fantasy 7 Revelation marking a pivotal moment for the franchise. Fans are getting closer to the unknown journey of the remake trilogy, with new gameplay footage hinting at expanded story elements that will extend the narrative into 2028, including a feature focusing on legendary characters like Sephiroth and Vincent.

In the horror and action genres, the lineup was equally intense. A preview for the live-action Resident Evil movie dropped a chilling glimpse of Raccoon City, showing infected figures lunging from the rooftops—a stark reminder that some scares are best delivered with a splash of blood. Meanwhile, the world of Metro 2039 continues to master atmospheric dread, promising tense, hostile encounters set to the rhythm of a chirping Geiger counter.

The showcase also highlighted the continued evolution of established franchises. Marvel’s Wolverine received a fresh trailer, focusing on Bolivar Trask’s mutant-hunting program and the terrifying creation of the Sentinel robots, pushing the action forward ahead of its September 15 release.

For fans of Japanese gaming influence, the State of Play provided a wealth of content. Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 is set to feature over 130 characters, offering players the chance to master skills from a massive roster of warriors. Furthermore, explorations into Asian studios brought exciting titles like Gundam: Rogue Orbit, which promises high-stakes mech action against colossal threats, and updates to the sprawling Monster Hunter Wilds with the massive Ascendance expansion, bringing new monsters and locations for 2027.

The roster also included rich, narrative-driven experiences. Dive into the world of Ghost of Yotei, which introduces a hardcore roguelite survival mode, allowing players to embody characters from both Ghost of Yotei and Ghost of Tsushima’s protagonist, Jin. For those craving deeper lore, the new expansion Ghost of Yotei Complete Edition: Ghosts of Sekigahara delves into Atsu’s past, offering new areas, weapons, and cosmetics.

The showcase also featured creative and quirky titles. A jazzy adventure in Rhapsody in Scarlet promises a trip to 1920s New York, playfully asking if The Mafia has magic?, while the new first-person folk-horror game Hunter’s Moon is set to arrive on October 26, offering a fresh, unsettling perspective. Indie gems like Uncanyon invite players to explore fantastical lands and mysterious ruins, and titles such as Keeper and SlashZero deliver unique, challenging gameplay.

Beyond the major titles, Sony also provided updates for the services themselves. PlayStation Plus is expanding its catalog with new additions like Mycopunk and updates to the PlayStation Classics library, while the Saros: Zenith update introduces challenging new modes and progression options for Housemarque’s Saros. And for racing enthusiasts, Gran Turismo: Spec IV is gearing up for further updates with new circuits and cars.

Finally, the gaming world also delivered some exciting sequel news, including Until Dawn 2, bringing a ghost-hunting crew to Akishima Island for a deadly new adventure, and a limited-edition release of the Grand Theft Auto 6 DualSense controllers, available in shimmering white and black finishes.
