PoE Devs See Right Path to Diablo 5 Optimism
The anticipation for Blizzard’s next entry in the ARPG genre, Diablo 5, has reached a fever pitch, even as the official release date pushes into spring 2029. But amidst the hype, some veterans are looking beyond the graphics and into the very soul of the franchise. Chris Wilson, a former co-founder of Grinding Gear Games, is cautiously optimistic about Blizzard’s direction, offering a fascinating perspective on where the series should go next.
Wilson recently released a video breaking down Blizzard’s announcements regarding the upcoming game, dissecting everything from the story elements to itemization and monster levels. While he offered some necessary critiques, his overall stance is one of guarded hope, largely fueled by the enduring influence of classic titles like Diablo 2.
He expressed particular appreciation for the new character and inventory screen, which brought back the satisfying differentiation of item sizes and stats reminiscent of the original. However, Wilson isn’t above pointing out areas that feel jarring, such as modern choices like flat DPS numbers on weapons. He acknowledged that while Diablo 2’s design can be clunky by today’s standards, he believes that Diablo 5 has the space to evolve without strictly adhering to that older, sometimes cumbersome, design philosophy.
“The bigger question,” Wilson mused, “is whether they risk alienating the modern audience they have cultivated over the last couple of decades. While it would be fun to resurrect a new version of Diablo 2 just for those of us, I don’t think they should justify that investment for a game with a niche audience.”
Instead of a nostalgic imitation, Wilson anticipates that Diablo 5 will strive to blend the best of both worlds: a modern ARPG that borrows heavily from the legacy of Diablo 2, rather than attempting a complete return to its original design philosophy.
Looking at the development timeline, Wilson speculates that Blizzard might opt for a delay. He suggests that pushing the release back would simply give Diablo 4 more breathing room. This notion stems from the sense that the early announcement of Diablo 5 might signal a shift away from the recent iteration.
Blizzard, meanwhile, seems set on building the narrative forward. Rather than a single massive release, the company plans to keep the story evolving through new seasons, with the next installment being a significant 30-year celebration of the franchise. This approach allows the lore to deepen organically while new content filters out to Diablo 4 over the coming year and a half.
Adding to the anticipation, the class system is also undergoing transformation. Blizzard has revealed a handful of classes slated for Diablo 5, promising more variety than ever before. There is lingering hope among fans that the iconic Demon Hunter class from Diablo 3 will make a triumphant return.
