PS5 gets a PS5 Pro-like AI upgrade
The PlayStation 5 arrived with a bang, but for many gamers, the experience is now entering an exciting new chapter. While the base console is still a powerhouse, the vision for visual fidelity is set to evolve, thanks to a revolutionary new feature poised to give the older PS5 a major boost: Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR).
QSSR is Sony’s latest AI-powered graphics upgrade, developed in collaboration with AMD, designed specifically to maximize performance and deliver stunning visual clarity on the base PlayStation 5. Unlike the premium PS5 Pro’s Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), which remains the graphical gold standard, QSSR aims to offer a tangible and noticeable improvement to the standard console experience.
This innovation achieves its goal by utilizing a streamlined neural network architecture, allowing the console to intelligently enhance game visuals. The promise is simple: greater pixel-level clarity and stability, bringing out extra detail in complex environments and characters that were previously just out of reach.
While the technology is still in its early stages, the impact is already being felt in exclusive titles. Currently, QSSR is supporting highly anticipated games like Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei. These titles are already receiving a patch to include the QSSR option, and Sony plans to roll this feature out to all PlayStation developers soon.
Developers are already seeing the results. Mike Fitzgerald, head of technology at Insomniac Games, noted that QSSR brings incredible detail to environments, citing examples like the busy streets of Madripoor and the dense alleyways of Shinjuku in Logan’s epic journey. Similarly, Jasmin Patry, lead rendering engineer for Ghost of Yotei, highlighted how QSSR excels at resolving fine details in characters and settings that were previously impossible on the base PS5.
This upgrade isn’t just a technical footnote; it represents a significant opportunity for the PS5 ecosystem. As the console ages, offering a major performance enhancement like QSSR makes financial and experiential sense for players. If QSSR becomes widely implemented across more games, it could become a major selling point for the base PS5, positioning it as a console with cutting-edge visual capabilities.
The move signals that Sony is committed to evolving the PS5 experience, ensuring that even the original console continues to deliver a vibrant, high-definition gaming experience for years to come.
