Removing Sombra’s Hack will upset Overwatch players
In the world of competitive gaming, sometimes the most disruptive changes are the ones that ultimately smooth out the rough edges. This is the story of Sombra, the notorious hacker of Overwatch, who has undergone a significant evolution, trading her signature disruptive powers for a more altruistic and tactical role as a support hero.
When Sombra made her support class debut in Season 5: A Grim Doctrine, Blizzard made some big decisions regarding her core mechanics. While the community was bracing for changes, the developers were determined to make the hero “better for the game.” This shift involved reimagining how Sombra interacts with her team and the battlefield.
The most noticeable change involved her iconic Hack ability. Instead of temporarily disabling enemies to gain an advantage, Sombra now utilizes Hotfix. This ability swaps the focus from pure disruption to team healing, allowing her to actively restore health to her allies over time. It’s a clear pivot, moving her role from a solitary disruptor to a vital backbone for her squad.
To further solidify this transformation, Sombra received a brand new ability: Cyberspace. This replaces her previous damage-over-time Virus ability with a new projectile that not only weakens foes but also provides essential healing for her teammates. The goal, as developers stated, was to create a gameplay experience where players would not just tolerate Sombra, but genuinely enjoy her presence.
Not everyone was thrilled about losing the ability to hack. Sombra’s identity is deeply tied to her status as a hacker, and some veteran players felt a disconnect. However, senior hero designer Leo Robles Gonzalez acknowledged the community reaction, admitting that Blizzard explored various rework options but ultimately decided on this direction.
Gonzalez noted that even in exploring versions where Sombra retained some hacking capability, the core experience still felt frustrating. The consensus seemed to be that the persistent feeling of Sombra appearing out of nowhere and instantly disabling opponents created more annoyance than fun.
Despite the overhaul, Sombra’s mastery of digital manipulation remains. While Hotfix focuses on healing allies, the concept of hacking isn’t entirely gone. Sombra can still use her skills to manipulate objects, such as health packs and deployable items like Torbjörn’s turrets and Ashe’s B.O.B. Furthermore, her ultimate ability, EMP, still allows her to hack human enemies when activated.
While these changes required some adjustment for veteran players, the overall shift has introduced a fresh, engaging dynamic. For many players, the new Sombra offers a powerful utility, turning her signature skills into tools that enhance team coordination rather than simply providing personal damage. It’s a testament to how game design can evolve, turning a polarizing character into a beloved and functional addition.
