Resident Evil Director Says No to Franchise Movies

He stated firmly that while he is making this film, he is not planning to dive into another franchise in the future. “I don’t want to write something where I have to make sure I’m tagging different data points to satisfy X. I just want to satisfy me,” Cregger explained. This sentiment reveals a desire to craft a narrative that is purely his own, rather than one that has to adhere strictly to the complex history of a sprawling franchise.
Cregger believes that by creating the Resident Evil movie, he was fulfilling a personal cinematic wish—making the film he wished had ever existed. This perspective suggests a focus on personal satisfaction and artistic integrity over commercial obligation. He clarified that his creative vision involved creating an original story, rather than merely taking existing game material and applying a familiar title.
This commitment to originality was also intertwined with the financial incentives of the project. Reports indicated that Cregger was reportedly paid $20 million for his involvement, which provided a significant factor in his decision to sign on to the project.
Despite his focus on avoiding franchise fatigue, Cregger remains active in the industry. While he may be stepping away from traditional franchise movie structures, he is continuing to collaborate on other ambitious projects. He is currently attached to co-write the upcoming Siren Head movie and is gearing up for his next cinematic venture, a sci-fi film titled The Flood, set in deep space.
