The nostalgia trip known as League of Legends Classic is coming to an end. Despite being hailed as a return to the foundational days of the MOBA genre, Riot Games is planning to conclude support for the spin-off, signaling an evolution—or perhaps an abandonment—of this beloved legacy.

Launched not even three months ago, Classic offered players a chance to relive the era of 5v5 MOBA gameplay, complete with original champions and systems. It was intended as a time capsule for longtime fans, a window back into the game’s origins. However, as the years have passed, the initial fervor has evidently faded, and the community has largely moved on to other aspects of the main League of Legends experience.

Riot Games acknowledges this shift. In a recent developer update, the studio confirmed plans to wrap up the current run of Classic, setting a timeline that will conclude after Season 3 of 2026. The developers noted that while many players enjoyed revisiting the olden days, the community has since pivoted to other parts of the League of Legends ecosystem.

This decision is a testament to the shifting sands of gaming trends. With the community’s focus elsewhere, Riot is choosing to focus its resources, admitting that the time for Classic’s current iteration has passed. To ease the transition for those who invested time and money, refunds are being issued for Classic-specific content.

However, the story isn’t about an outright cancellation; it’s about reinvention. Riot insists that League Classic is a “true labor of love,” and they are not discarding the history entirely. Instead, the developers are looking toward the future, aiming to bring the Classic experience back in a new format.

The future vision involves restructuring the mode, potentially introducing it as an event mode with new adjustments and additions. For players who wish to continue engaging with the Classic spirit, Riot is working on incorporating new (old) champions back into the roster. Furthermore, the Classic store will be streamlined, focusing on core elements like Champions, Runes, and Rune Pages starting from the 26.21 update.

It is a bittersweet moment for the development team, balancing the desire to honor history with the reality of player engagement. While the current iteration of Classic is drawing to a close, Riot is clearly committed to exploring different ways to play and keep the spirit of the classic MOBA alive for years to come.
