The reign of Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is drawing to a close, and as the studio Owlcat prepares for its next grand endeavor, it is time to reflect on the legacy of one of the genre’s most celebrated cRPGs. Launched in late 2023, the game quickly cemented its reputation as a masterpiece, lauded for its masterful writing, complex characters, and deeply engaging narrative. It is widely regarded as one of the finest Warhammer 40,000 video games ever created.

The success of Rogue Trader led to further expansion from the studio, including the highly anticipated Dark Heresy. But before diving into that next epic, Owlcat is choosing to wrap up the story of Rogue Trader with a final, spectacular offering: the Processional of the Damned DLC.

This final expansion is set to layer rich new content directly into the core experience, adding depth and new avenues for player choice. It promises a fresh storyline, a captivating new companion, specialized playable archetypes, formidable new enemies, and significant gameplay features.

At the heart of the DLC is the introduction of Stella, a mysterious and potent companion. Stella is a young woman raised within the strictures of the Ecclesiarchy, possessing formidable psychic abilities that mark her as an unsanctioned psyker. As the conduit of the God Emperor’s will, her unstable powers manifest dramatically, causing her to shed tears of blood and display cracks in her porcelain skin. In combat, she unleashes devastating psychic flares, dealing area of effect damage to those around her. Whether players choose to forge Stella into a living weapon, cultivate her as a trusted ally, or embrace the madness that consumes her, the narrative path is entirely up to the player.

Beyond Stella, the DLC introduces new mechanical depth. Players will gain access to a new Archetype: the melee-focused Zealot, designed for those who favor bludgeoning enemies to death. Furthermore, a new feature called Madness will affect all companions, adding a volatile layer of unpredictability to the journey. The enemy roster is also expanded, introducing new foes from the ranks of the Arch Enemy and the Aeladari.

Owlcat’s creative vision continues to evolve with its next projects, including Dark Heresy and the ambitious title The Expanse: Osiris Reborn. Some observers have even speculated that the latter aims to capture the complexity and depth of games like Baldur’s Gate 4. As the studio moves forward, the promise remains: to top them all.
