Ron Gilbert on making another Monkey Island game really complicated
For decades, Ron Gilbert has conjured up worlds filled with puzzles, humor, and memorable characters, cementing his legacy as the undisputed creator of the iconic Monkey Island series.
But even a legend faces uncharted territory when it comes to new projects. When asked about the prospect of creating another adventure game, Gilbert admitted that the process would be “really complicated.” The sheer complexity arose from navigating the maze of companies and partnerships required to bring such an ambitious title to life.
This realization led him down a different path. Rather than engaging with the traditional game-publisher system, Gilbert chose to bypass the conventional structure for his next big adventure. This decision allowed him complete creative control over his vision.
Instead of working through established publishing channels, he opted for a more direct route, focusing entirely on realizing his own unique concept. This approach culminated in the development of Thimbleweed Park 2.
