Skyrim in space was too much for Bethesda

When Starfield emerged from Bethesda Game Studios, it immediately positioned itself as one of the most ambitious projects in the studio’s history. It promised a vast, sprawling open world set in space, a vision that aimed to redefine the open-world RPG experience. Yet, as with many titanic undertakings, the ambition often casts a long shadow over the execution.

The sheer scale of the project presented formidable challenges that few developers ever face. Lead systems designer Kurt Kuhlmann, who helped architect the game’s core mechanics, offered a candid look behind the curtain. He admitted that the development process was complicated by the necessity of implementing a massive engine overhaul—a monumental technical feat for Bethesda since the original Oblivion.

Kuhlmann explained that the team needed this revolutionary new system to function before they could build upon it. Trying to integrate such a radical change meant that the process was inherently complicated, and the later the development went, the less time they had to iterate and refine the experience.

Beyond the technical hurdles, the scope of the vision itself was staggering. Kuhlmann noted that even with the team assembled for Starfield, it simply wasn’t large enough to capture the breadth of content the grand idea required. “We needed way more devs,” he recalled, emphasizing that the ambition outstripped the resources available to realize it fully.

This massive vision was driven by the desire of Bethesda’s leadership, specifically Todd Howard, to create a truly epic space game—a world far grander than a simple planetary expansion. Kuhlmann conceded that while the final product was impressive, the goal itself might have been flawed. He suggested that the vision was perhaps “ambitious as hell,” and in retrospect, perhaps not their strongest creative direction.

Ultimately, while the journey was fraught with complexity and resource strain, the team managed to pull off an impressive feat. Although Starfield may not have perfectly aligned with the studio’s traditional strengths, it stands as a testament to what can be achieved when a team commits to a bold, albeit challenging, creative goal. It remains a landmark achievement in the ongoing evolution of Bethesda’s world.
