Star Wars Magellan AAA Action RPG Jedi or Mandalorian
In the sprawling galaxy of Star Wars, there’s always potential waiting to be explored, even in the projects that never make it to launch. Recently, a tantalizing glimpse of that lost potential emerged in the form of gameplay footage for Star Wars: Magellan, an ambitious action RPG that was ultimately cancelled.
This previously unseen material showcases a multiplayer Star Wars RPG that promised much more than its contemporaries. Codenamed Magellan, the project was developed by the studio Echtra Games, which was founded by former developers from Blizzard and later acquired by Zynga. Working alongside NaturalMotion, the team aimed to deliver an expansive experience for PC, XBOX, and PS5.
Magellan wasn’t content with a single hero; it envisioned a world where players could embody multiple facets of the Star Wars universe. The game featured at least two playable character classes, allowing players to choose between the agility of a Jedi and the gritty might of a Mandalorian. The vision included deep interaction through an NPC bond system, encouraging players to forge lasting relationships with their companions.
The gameplay mechanics were designed for high-octane action, blending combat with loot mechanics. Footage revealed innovative abilities: the Jedi class could wield the Force to repel laser fire and push foes back, while the Mandalorian could utilize a powerful jetpack for short bursts of flight and deploy a flamethrower.
The artwork and gameplay highlighted unique characters, including a caped Mandalorian fighter nicknamed Triggerman and a Twi’lek Jedi, both framed as The Exiled Mandalorian and The Hunted Jedi. The visual style combined with the combat showcased dynamic movement against enemies ranging from Stormtroopers and droids to hulking mechs, complete with explosive red barrels adding to the intensity.
Despite its promising design, Star Wars: Magellan met an untimely end. The project was cancelled in 2025 when Zynga shut down Echtra Games, leaving the ambitious RPG to rust in the backlog of other cancelled Star Wars titles like Project Ragtag and Battlefront 3.
While the journey of Magellan ended, the Star Wars universe continues to evolve. Fans can now look forward to exciting new developments, including the highly anticipated second season of the Ahsoka series and the upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter, both set to launch next year, ensuring that the galaxy’s adventures remain on the horizon.
