Starfield hits 17M players Bethesda teases Starborn DLC
Amidst the usual whirlwind of industry shifts, Bethesda Game Studios has taken a moment to speak directly to its devoted community, offering reassurance and a glimpse into the future of their massive universe. The message comes as the wider gaming landscape grapples with significant corporate restructuring, including major layoffs at Xbox.
Development chief Todd Howard addressed fans today, aiming to settle some nerves while navigating challenging economic realities facing the industry. While BGS was certainly affected by these cuts, the studio firmly insisted that its current focus remains squarely on the epic saga of The Elder Scrolls 6, signaling stability for their core projects.
This pivot naturally drew attention to other major titles, particularly Starfield, which some fans felt temporarily slipped from the immediate spotlight. Despite mixed initial reception and subsequent updates, Starfield continues to boast an incredible footprint, having attracted over 17 million players and amassed nearly a billion hours of gameplay.
Howard emphasized that this immense player engagement justifies continued investment. “STARFIELD CONTINUES,” he stated. “With over 17 million players logging almost a billion hours to date, Starfield remains an important part of our future.”
Looking ahead, the studio is clearly planning a sustained evolution for the solar system. The roadmap involves continuing to expand the Settled Systems with new narratives and gameplay improvements, all while preparing for major content drops. Fans can expect further expansions and updates targeting Starfield next year, including exciting new Starborn content.
The commitment extends beyond mere expansion; BGS is also deepening player agency. Over 40% of players already customize their experience through Creations, and the studio plans to continue pouring resources into creators, offering new ways for players to truly personalize their adventures in space.
This strategic shift reflects a broader corporate philosophy. Jill Braff, Bethesda’s boss, explained that the necessary changes were about ensuring stability and sustainable growth rather than chasing every new title. “To be successful in the future,” she noted, “we need to change course. We must strengthen our business, return to sustainable growth, and ensure we can continue investing in our franchises and our players.”
This refocus means aligning talent and resources toward their strongest pillars—The Elder Scrolls and Fallout—rather than scattering efforts across numerous independent studio ambitions. The goal is to deliver the most impactful content roadmap possible for the players who matter most.
