John ‘Bucky’ Buckley, head of communications and publishing, revealed that while he was confident in some designs, others completely redefined his expectations. He admitted that the unexpected rise in popularity came from creatures like Cattiva, Chikipi, and Lamball, which felt like the three-o’clock surprise upon waking up on the beach.
Buckley confessed that while he was pretty confident in Lamball, the adorably fluffy sheep-like creature sporting a deadly weapon, it was Cattiva—the pink, smirking feline—that truly astonished him. He noted that Cattiva quickly evolved into a mascot status within the game’s community.
The duo of Cattiva and Chillet, in particular, have steadily become some of the most recognizable faces in the survival game. The phenomenon is especially pronounced in Asia, with Cattiva having achieved widespread recognition across China.
Buckley pointed out that this unexpected appeal led to a fascinating look at the game’s development history. He suggested that perhaps Pocketpair should revisit the “graveyard” of scrapped Pal designs, a collection of creatures that never made it into the final product. It’s a wild thought that another seemingly horrendous design might just be waiting for its moment to become beloved.
Beyond the main roster, the passion for the simpler 1.0 Pals also surprised the lead developer. The widespread enthusiasm for Snock, the snail or slug-like creature, showed that players are drawn to creatures based on simple, endearing forms as much as epic monsters.
