The path of game development is rarely a straight line, and for the titans of the gaming industry, it often involves surprising detours. The decision to shift focus on ambitious new worlds, rather than sticking to the expected roadmap, perfectly illustrates this reality at Bethesda.

For many fans, the anticipated next chapter was simply The Elder Scrolls 6. After the success of Fallout and the rhythm established by the franchise, one might have expected the next massive undertaking to be the grand continuation of the Dragonborn saga. However, the actual trajectory of the studio took a fascinating, unexpected turn, involving a whirlwind of experiments and a gamble on the unknown.

This unexpected shift was highlighted by former Skyrim co-lead Kurt Kuhlmann. He recalled the comfortable, established rhythm that had defined Bethesda’s production—Fallout, then Elder Scrolls, then back to Fallout. Switching genres and series provided a welcome change of pace. Instead of immediately diving into TES 6, the team navigated a different landscape, which ultimately led to some of the most ambitious games ever conceived.

The initial focus swung toward Fallout 76, a massive project that expanded the latest Fallout phase of the cycle. But it was the subsequent leap to Starfield that truly redefined the studio’s output. It was a different kind of evolution, one that allowed the team to explore entirely new creative boundaries.

When asked about the direction, Kuhlmann noted that the focus was not on a sudden rush toward TES 6, but rather a spontaneous decision. A pivot occurred when the team decided to pursue a new direction: “We’re making this space game,” he explained. This decision was less about following a straight line and more about embracing a bold vision, even if it meant deviating from the most obvious path.

This journey was certainly demanding. It took many years for the vision of Starfield to fully materialize and for the development process to find its footing. As one developer noted, it took seven years just for the experience to reach a point where it could be called genuinely fun to play.

Today, eight years after the announcement, the focus remains firmly on expansion and innovation. While The Elder Scrolls 6 remains on the horizon without a concrete release date, the success of the new titles has yielded significant results. With Starfield having reached 17 million players, Bethesda is now looking toward ongoing support, promising Year 3 of post-launch content, gameplay improvements, and new story quests for the massive space RPG.

The industry is watching these developments closely. With new leadership changes, such as the appointment of a new Xbox CEO, there is growing momentum pushing Bethesda for faster releases across its flagship titles. Whether the next great adventure will be in space or among ancient dragons remains to be seen, but the studio has proven that when they pivot, they can create something truly extraordinary.
