Todd Howard: Fallout’s future is bigger than the wait for Fallout 5
In a post-apocalyptic landscape filled with radiation and ruins, the world of Fallout has captivated millions through its popular television series on Prime Video. Yet, for fans eagerly awaiting the next major installment, the gap between games and streaming often feels wider than the wasteland itself. The question remains: how does a sprawling franchise manage the rhythm of content release?
Bethesda Game Studios head Todd Howard offers a unique perspective on this dynamic, suggesting that timing is everything. Speaking to reporters, Howard framed the franchise not just as a series of games, but as a larger narrative arc where television serves as one chapter. He emphasized that true health for a franchise depends on the ability to execute all projects—be it mobile games, TV shows, or remasters—at the highest level.
“I view TV as one chapter, and I view when is a franchise really, really healthy, and when can we execute whatever we’re doing, whether it’s a mobile game or a TV show or remasters, making sure that we execute those at the highest level,” Howard explained to Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier.
Howard further elaborated on this concept, hinting that Bethesda was seeking the perfect “pocket-timing”—a synchronicity between various creative outputs that flows seamlessly with the franchise’s groove. It seems the challenge isn’t just developing new content, but mastering the complex choreography of a massive, evolving universe.
Despite the focus on timing, concrete plans for the future are taking shape. Bethesda has confirmed that remasters for both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are currently underway, ensuring beloved classics receive updated treatment. Furthermore, the franchise is expanding through collaboration; Obsidian Entertainment will be teaming up with Bethesda to develop a new Fallout project, promising fresh narrative experiences.
The ongoing development also includes updating existing titles. Fallout 76 is set to receive a major update later this year, bringing in Raven Rock, a prequel that sets the stage for events in Fallout 3.
Looking ahead, the long-term destination remains clear: Fallout 5. This ambitious title is currently in pre-production, positioning it as the next major chapter in the franchise’s epic story. While fans continue to watch and wait, the focus shifts to managing the creative execution, ensuring that every piece of content—from television to gaming—aligns perfectly with the vision.
