Why GTA Co-Founder is avoiding GTA 6
The Creative Director’s Strategy: How Dan Houser Navigates the World of Gaming
Dan Houser, one of the co-founders of Rockstar Games, left the massive studio in 2020 to launch his own creative enterprise, Absurd Ventures. Though he remains inextricably linked to the legendary GTA franchise, Houser is now applying his unique perspective to new creative territories, including his involvement with the upcoming GTA 6 project.
Houser’s approach to creativity is less about consuming trends and more about deliberate avoidance. When asked about watching trailers for new games, he admitted he deliberately avoids consuming content that he feels might disrupt his creative flow. For someone who spends significant time crafting open-world games and pioneering innovative marketing strategies, watching what others are doing can be distracting.
“I don’t need to see what other people are doing,” Houser explained. “I’m always trying to think about new ways of doing it, not sit there in some kind of comparison of what I would have done differently.”
This philosophy extends to gameplay itself. Houser finds that playing open-world games often pulls him into a distracting mode of analysis, forcing him to deconstruct the strengths and weaknesses of different teams in real time. Instead, he prefers to focus on his role as a creative director, seeking out novel ideas or inspiration that haven’t been done before.
He views his job as constantly seeking out fresh inspiration—whether stealing concepts from older media or simply pondering what others have overlooked—rather than sitting in a comparison loop.
This strategic avoidance is not about burying his head in the sand. While Houser avoids consuming external media, he does have a team at Absurd Ventures dedicated to examining what the wider industry is doing. This balanced approach allows him to maintain a unique, forward-thinking perspective while ensuring his new projects are grounded in thoughtful strategy.
In a deliberate effort to maintain creative purity, Houser has historically avoided media he felt could unduly influence his work. When developing Red Dead Redemption, he avoided watching Western films, and when formulating the GTA series, he steered clear of acclaimed television shows like HBO’s The Sopranos, believing these external inputs would have disrupted his vision.
Today, Houser is channeling this focused energy into new endeavors at Absurd Ventures. The company is currently developing multiple projects, including an open-world comedy game slated for reveal in the coming months, and a dystopian science fiction title exploring themes of rogue AI and the chaotic world of video game development gone wrong.
Despite his preference for independent creation, Houser maintains a deep connection to the world of gaming. He views his association with the GTA franchise as a great compliment, while simultaneously holding out hope that the new creations emerging from Absurd Ventures will find their own success.
