Creating a virtual world as sprawling and detailed as the one Rockstar Games is crafting for GTA 6 is less about following a script and more about deep, immersive exploration. When speaking with the development team, the focus isn’t just on the narrative romance between protagonists Jason and Lucia, but on the monumental effort required to capture the true essence of a place.

The secret to building a believable environment is taking the team on research trips. These aren’t simple scouting missions; they are full-scale cultural immersions. To capture the vibe of Florida, team members traveled from Miami through the Florida Keys and down to Key West, driving for days and absorbing the landscape and local culture.

For head of development Aaron Garbut, this hands-on approach is the foundation of the entire project. “Every game we make starts with research trips. It’s where we get to explore both the place and our ideas as a group,” he explained. This shared experience—being surrounded by locations and ideas—is what breathes life into the world.

These excursions go far beyond simple sightseeing. Developers capture everything, flying low over the everglades and hovering over a live Beyoncé concert, documenting the unique juxtaposition of the environment. They delve deep, hanging with locals, hearing untold stories, and learning about the complex tapestry of the region.

This research is designed to capture the full spectrum of the location. Miami, for instance, is an extreme environment—a place defined by incredible wealth, deep poverty, excess, craziness, and the relentless hustle. By experiencing these extremes, the team aimed to weave them into the game in surprising and organic ways.

This approach means that real-world elements aren’t mere decoration; they are intrinsic to the world design. Details, like pedestrian dialogue, local radio shows, and advertisements, are treated as vital components, ensuring the environment feels lived-in and authentic to the places it depicts.

Conversely, Rockstar Games is deliberately steering clear of simply recreating viral moments. Recognizing the long development timeline, the focus shifts away from chasing fleeting references. Instead, GTA 6’s satire zeroes in on modern culture, simmering conspiracy theories, and the strange ways people react to chaotic events, offering a more timeless and layered experience for players.

The real-world connection is already making waves. Just last week, the Miami Heat announced a special match where the team will wear a GTA 6 uniform in a themed arena, proving that the fictional world is already bleeding into the real one.
