To bring a fictional world to life, sometimes you have to leave the screen and step into the real one. For the development of Marvel’s Wolverine, the team embarked on an ambitious mission: a deep dive into the real world, trading virtual blueprints for physical reality. This involved an extensive series of location-scanning trips to Japan, a journey that was as much an exploration as it was a data collection exercise.

Before the team even touched a plane, months of virtual scouting and meticulous route planning were completed, in close collaboration with the Sony Interactive Entertainment teams in Japan. The goal was simple yet complex: design a path that would maximize variety, capturing the widest range of biomes and cultural landscapes requested by the game’s environment team, all within a limited timeframe.

The planning phase set the stage for an adventure. While previous missions typically focused on minimizing travel time to maximize scanning efficiency, this trip demanded a different approach. The team committed to traversing distinct regions, embracing the challenge of in-trip travel to gather the rich, varied tapestry necessary for an authentic world.

The journey itself was a masterclass in sensory overload. The team spent hours navigating Japanese highways, engaging in curious local interactions, and observing the subtle details of the landscape. It was a real-world lesson in scale, texture, and culture—a necessary prerequisite for creating a truly believable environment.

Why the demanding journey to Japan? Authenticity is the cornerstone of a compelling game. High-resolution scanning captures the physical truth of a location: the grain of the rock, the texture of bark, the subtle signs of weathering on pavement, and the unique atmosphere of a specific biome. They captured not just geometric scans, but also the unique rhythm of vegetation, the patterns of architecture, and the specific details of cultural construction, like unique bamboo gutter systems. The result was a massive haul: over 600 scans across four distinct biomes, totaling more than 5.6 terabytes of data and nearly 190,000 photographs.

This was more than just a logistical feat; it was an immersion. The trip proved that taking the time to deeply research and experience a location elevates the final product. It was a challenging expedition, but an immensely successful one—a meaningful step forward in how we collaborate to build believable worlds.
