WoW dev brings back Make-A-Wish quest in new MMO
A Heartwarming Legacy: How World of Warcraft is Honoring a Beloved Story
As World of Warcraft: Forever prepares for its launch, it brings with it a new chapter for the iconic MMO, focusing on the pure, original experience of 2004. But amidst the focus on classic content, one deeply personal quest has taken center stage, weaving a truly touching tribute to community and remembrance.
This quest is Kyle’s Gone Missing, a journey that has been a cherished request within the gaming community for years. It originated during the Burning Crusade era of World of Warcraft, but its inclusion in the new experience is a testament to the power of fan wishes and the desire to honor a deeply meaningful memory.
The story behind the quest is rooted in a gesture of kindness. It was initially conceived as a Make-A-Wish request from a young player named Ezra ‘Ephoenix’ Chatterton, who was battling brain cancer at the time. Blizzard responded by allowing Chatterton to design and perform the voice lines for the quest, creating an experience that was both adorable and immensely heartwarming.
Sadly, Ezra Chatterton passed away in 2008. Nearly two decades later, his memory has found a powerful place in the game world. As the community has continued to advocate for this quest, the developers listened, making an exception to bring this poignant storyline into the new game.
Principal game designer Johnny Cash confirmed the inclusion, speaking about the emotional weight of the decision. He emphasized that bringing the quest into WoW: Forever was an honor. “I had the honor and privilege of bringing Kyle’s Gone Missing into WoW: Forever,” Cash stated. “Ezra Chatterton was an enormous WoW fan, the creator and voice actor behind Ahab Wheathoof, and the creator of Kyle. A tear was shed during this one, my friends. Rest in peace, Ezra.”
The quest invites players to seek out Chatterton’s NPC, Ahab Wheathoof, in Bloodhoof Village in the Mulgore region—the starting zone for Tauren players. While the details of the quest remain a mystery for those who haven’t experienced it, the journey itself is a poignant reminder that games can be more than just digital worlds; they can be vessels for human connection and lasting tribute.
