Xbox Sales More Than Doubled While PS5 and Switch 2 Dropped
In a dynamic landscape where console sales are constantly shifting, one platform managed to punch above its weight during the latest monthly report for the US video game industry: Xbox. While the market is experiencing some significant turbulence, Circana’s findings reveal that the Xbox family of consoles was the only platform to successfully grow its sales over the reporting period.
The performance data highlights a dramatic divergence among the major players. The Xbox Series X|S unit sales saw an impressive increase of 86% compared to June 2025, establishing June 2026 as the strongest month yet for the platform. This remarkable growth underscores sustained consumer appetite for Microsoft’s offerings, even amidst broader market contraction.
This surge in Xbox hardware sales contrasts sharply with the performance of competitors. PlayStation 5 unit sales declined by 43% compared to the previous year, while the Nintendo Switch 2 experienced a substantial drop of 78% over the same timeframe. These figures suggest that hardware investment priorities are rapidly being redefined among gamers.
Looking at revenue streams, the disparity is even more pronounced. Xbox Series X|S sales more than doubled, demonstrating significant financial momentum. In contrast, spending across the other platforms cooled considerably; Switch 2 hardware spending fell by 79%, and PS5 sales dipped by 19%.
Overall hardware expenditure in the US dropped significantly, falling by a mighty 62% to $383 million. This massive contraction points toward a global pause or recalibration in large-scale console purchasing, yet within this shrinking market, the trends are clear.
Despite the overall decline in unit sales, the Nintendo Switch 2 remains an unexpectedly dominant force. Although its sales volume contracted sharply, it finished June 2026 as the best-selling platform by both units and dollar value, cementing its status as the top seller among all consoles that month.
This trend of varied success extends to software performance. In terms of game sales, titles like UFC 6 topped the charts as the top-selling game in June 2026. Furthermore, titles like Resident Evil Requiem secured the title for best-selling game overall so far in 2026.
The snapshot reveals a shifting ecosystem where digital momentum and platform strategy are proving more impactful than raw hardware volume. While Xbox leads the growth metrics, the market is clearly evolving, with Nintendo holding the top spot in overall sales and engaging titles setting new benchmarks for success.
