268 more Xbox layoffs shake Ninja Theory and Arkane
The gaming world is currently watching a seismic shift at Xbox, as the company implements a sweeping reorganization designed to reboot its trajectory. Following a massive restructuring initiative, Xbox has announced a new wave of redundancies, with 268 staff set to exit the business.
This move is part of a much larger, transformative effort. Earlier this year, CEO Asha Sharma initiated what the company calls the most significant restructure in Xbox history, aiming to fundamentally realign the business toward growth and profitability. This latest phase of change builds upon the initial 1,600 role eliminations made earlier in the year.
Under the banner of ‘Reset Xbox,’ the goal is clear: to shake up the operational structure and foster a more profitable environment. Analysts suggest this deep-seated change is projected to ultimately impact up to 3,200 jobs throughout the 2027 fiscal year.
The changes are not confined to administrative roles; they are reshaping the creative ecosystem. Several first-party studios have already stepped away from the Xbox Game Studios framework. For instance, developers of titles like South of Midnight and Psychonauts 2 have regained their independence, separating from Compulsion Games and Double Fine Productions, marking an eight-year freedom for these creative teams.
The ripple effect continues across the development landscape. Studios like Undead Labs have successfully transitioned, securing new publishing agreements, while others face uncertain futures. The situation for the creator of Hellblade Ninja Theory is complex, as negotiations for closure are underway while the company explores alternative paths forward, leaving the fate of upcoming projects like Senua in limbo.
Meanwhile, other major entities are adjusting their mandates. Obsidian Entertainment, for example, is now operating under the management of Bethesda, marking a new collaborative chapter for the pair as they tackle new Fallout titles.
Adding another layer of corporate evolution, the publisher position of Activision Blizzard King is expanding significantly. It now holds operational control over franchises like Rare and World’s Edge, including the popular Sea of Thieves and Age of Empires. Furthermore, this entity is establishing a new team to lead production for the next mainline installment of the Halo series.
This multifaceted restructuring signals a dramatic realignment for Xbox, balancing necessary corporate adjustments with the ongoing pursuit of creative freedom and a sustainable financial future.
