AC devs create 20 builds daily in Amsterdam
When game development meets high-stakes action, the process can often seem like a chaotic sprint. Yet, behind the polished facade of a title like 1666: Amsterdam lies a fascinating story of speed, iteration, and some serious technological bumps.
The game, which recently launched into Steam Early Access, is the brainchild of Patrice Désilets, the creator of the iconic Assassin’s Creed series. Taking the reins of this project marked an exciting pivot for Désilets, allowing him to explore a new aesthetic—one that blends the familiar lineage of Assassin’s Creed with a distinctly witchy, fast-paced action experience.
The journey to bringing this vision to life has been a masterclass in relentless production. As the lead developer, Désilets revealed that the team operates at a dizzying pace, routinely producing between fifteen to twenty builds every single day. This approach isn’t about waiting for absolute perfection; it’s a philosophy centered on progression, embracing an iterative process where forward movement is prioritized over flawless detail.
However, the development path was not without its unexpected challenges. Earlier this year, the project faced scrutiny when AI-generated assets were discovered in the game’s demonstration. This incident prompted an immediate response from the development team, who swiftly apologized and made a firm commitment to excise all AI-generated content from the final game, ensuring the integrity of the artistic vision remained paramount.
This commitment demonstrates that while innovation is welcome in the creative space, the final product must remain grounded in intentional design. The development team has since focused on refining the core experience, managing the complex task of integrating new content while addressing numerous technical fixes.
Looking ahead, the team estimates that bringing 1666: Amsterdam to its full potential will take approximately one year, supported by regular major updates that introduce new content at regular intervals. In just the first month following its release, the developers delivered two significant updates, with the second one alone featuring over two hundred fixes, showcasing a dedication to polishing the experience for players.
While 1666: Amsterdam carries the signature flair of an Assassin’s Creed creator, its DNA is surprisingly broader. It manages to capture the essence of a witchy body-hopper while drawing strong parallels to the stealth and atmosphere found in games like Hitman, creating a unique and compelling experience for those who step into its world.
