Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Brings Quality-of-Life XP Updates and Developer Secrets

Get ready for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, and the developers are bringing some welcome changes focused entirely on making the grind smoother. One of the most immediate quality-of-life improvements is set to hit the XP token system, ensuring that players aren’t penalized for taking a quick break.

Starting with MW4, the way Double XP tokens operate will be streamlined. Previously, the timer would tick down even when players were idling in menus or searching for a match—a frustrating system for anyone who needed a moment to stretch or grab a snack. Now, 2XP tokens will only count down when you are actively engaged in a match. This change eliminates the wasted bonus time, meaning you can step away without sacrificing your progress.

This subtle adjustment acknowledges that players have lives outside the game. Imagine being able to step away to let your dog out, grab a drink, or take a necessary pause without the XP timer constantly ticking down. It’s a small change, but it significantly enhances the overall player experience.

Beyond these immediate system tweaks, the team at Infinity Ward has been transparent about the development process. They recently shared insights during a The Road to Launch video, offering a deep dive into the complex mechanics that underpin the game.

In this session, key developers discussed everything from time-to-kill values and spawning algorithms to addressing various UI issues that arose during the extensive beta testing phase. These discussions give players a peek behind the curtain, demonstrating the dedication to fine-tuning the game mechanics before launch.

Adding to the positive news, players will also have more control over their cosmetics. As previously confirmed, while the toggle feature for hiding unwanted skins is not yet supported in MW4 itself, players will continue to benefit from the ability to toggle off skins they don’t wish to see in Warzone.

The game is set to launch on October 23, bringing a fresh iteration of the franchise to a wide range of platforms. Modern Warfare 4 will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, the Switch 2, and PC. This title marks a significant milestone, becoming the first Call of Duty release on Nintendo platforms since the launch of Call of Duty: Ghosts back in 2013, and it is also the first game in the series to skip the PS4 and Xbox One.
