Actor looks at Squirrel Girl despite being banned from photos
Behind every blockbuster and every cinematic universe lies a treasure trove of untold stories, and recently, an actor involved in Marvel television opened up a vault of behind-the-scenes images from a project that never made it to screen. The revelation offers a delightful glimpse into the chaotic, creative world that surrounds major studio productions.
Derek Theler, who was set to star as Mr. Immortal in the pilot of <New Warriors>, shared these exclusive photos and clips on Instagram, offering fans a peek at the production of the series that ultimately disappeared into Hollywood limbo.
The premise itself sounds like a perfect blend of earnest superheroics and relatable comedy. The team protecting Cleveland, Ohio, was an unlikely crew featuring Squirrel Girl, Night Thrasher, Speedball, Microbe, and Debrii. Theler described the concept as hilarious: “A group of young adults with superpowers trying to figure out how to actually become superheroes, all while being followed by a documentary camera crew. Basically, Marvel meets The Office.”
Despite positive reception for the pilot episode, the project eventually faded away without any major dramatic cancellations or clear explanations. It remains one of those projects that simply vanished into the ether.
Seeking to document his journey into the MCU, Theler managed to capture some secret footage from the set. Since they were reportedly forbidden from taking official photos or videos during filming, he secretly gathered this behind-the-scenes material, which is now one of the only documented glimpses outside of what Marvel keeps locked away.
Reflecting on the project’s fate, Theler pondered what might have been. He wondered if the story had resonated with audiences and if multiple seasons could have materialized, highlighting the bittersweet nature of creative ambition that doesn’t always succeed.
While <New Warriors> has concluded its run, the characters and actors continue their journeys within the broader Marvel landscape. For instance, Squirrel Girl’s actor, Milana Vayntrub, has since lent her voice to other Marvel projects, including Marvel Rivals, demonstrating the enduring creative flow of the universe.
The wider MCU also continues to evolve, with Marvel Studios adjusting its television output. Recent projects like Daredevil: Born Again season 3 and VisionQuest continue to fill Disney Plus, showcasing that even when specific shows end, the overarching narrative of superheroes remains a dynamic force.
