Roblox Under Fire: Congress Investigates Child Harm
The digital world promised a safe haven for children, yet reports suggest that one of the industry’s largest platforms is deeply entangled with serious criminal activities. In a striking move demanding accountability, US Senators Josh Hawley and Dick Durbin have initiated a congressional investigation into Roblox, fueled by alarming claims that the gaming platform poses a significant threat to child safety.
The senators’ concerns stem from testimony suggesting that despite being marketed as a safe digital playground for young users, the environment on Roblox facilitates severe harm. They highlighted disturbing allegations that over the past decade, individuals have used the platform to commit serious acts of violence and harm against children, including grooming, sexual abuse, kidnapping, rape, and even murder.
The accusations paint a grim picture: the platform is reportedly being exploited for trafficking child sexual abuse material, participating in sexually explicit and often violent virtual experiences with minors, and using tactics to bribe or extort children into producing explicit content or meeting in person.
This concern is not isolated. The data presented suggests a disturbing trend. Roblox reported 65,381 instances of suspected child sexual exploitation to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children in 2025, a number that more than doubled compared to the previous year.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the senators argued that profit and engagement metrics appear to supersede the well-being of users. They asserted that this alleged criminal activity warrants immediate congressional scrutiny, stating clearly: “children on your platform are hurting. Congress will not look the other way.”
As a direct result of these public demands, Roblox Corporation has been instructed by the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism to preserve relevant records and turn over documents by August 31.
The investigation also places significant pressure on the platform’s leadership. The Roblox CEO, David Baszucki, has been tasked with providing evidence detailing how the company plans to better police itself and ensure child safety protocols are rigorously enforced across the entire ecosystem.
In response to the scrutiny, Roblox Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman released a statement reaffirming the company’s commitment to safety. He assured that the organization would share the facts regarding how they protect children on the platform as part of the ongoing review.
The spotlight on Roblox extends beyond US borders. Lawmakers in Australia have placed the platform under intense review concerning reports of grooming and sexual content, and state authorities in Florida and Texas have launched separate investigations over accusations of child exploitation and predator breeding grounds.
While some regional efforts are underway—such as Roblox’s previous agreement to invest over $12 million in Nevada to establish a safer environment for young users—other jurisdictions, including the United Kingdom, are considering implementing more drastic social restrictions on games targeted toward children to provide robust protection online.
