Avatar creators reveal new old school anime animation style
Air, water, fire, and earth are bubbling back to life in the latest installment of the Avatar saga, Avatar: Seven Havens. This new series picks up the story following the legendary events of Avatar: The Last Airbender and Avatar: The Legend of Korra, focusing on a new generation of successors: the twin Avatars, Pavi and Nisha.
These youngsters inherit a world marked by the mysterious Cataclysm, an event that left a deep mark on the Avatar’s legacy. As the series unfolds, the audience is immediately drawn to a significant shift in the visual aesthetic, presenting a look that feels both familiar and wonderfully fresh compared to the previous seasons.
The creative team clearly aimed for something distinct. Co-creator Bryan Konietzko provided insight into this evolution, noting a desire to capture a specific kind of mood. He referenced the rich heritage of vintage animation, mentioning masters from the 70s and 80s anime era, and drawing parallels to classic works like Nadia’s Secret and Blue Water.
Executive Producer Ethan Spaulding confirmed that this shift in style was intentional. He explained that the goal was to present a completely different image for the new chapter. The focus moved away from heavy shadow layers toward a more vibrant, animated style.
“It was appealing to me when they contacted me to work on this,” Spaulding shared. “They went ahead and did the style game. This one feels a little more animated, I think, than the others might.”
The visual change was rooted in a desire for color and light over darkness. Spaulding noted that the team considered making the series less somber, suggesting the new approach prioritized bright colors rather than deep shadows.
As Pavi and Nisha embark on their adventure, the journey promises to be visually striking. The new style sets the stage for their dynamic exploits, creating an engaging world where the elemental forces of the world shine brightly as they navigate their destiny.
Fans will now eagerly await how this fresh, colorful style complements the unfolding story of the Seven Havens and what new dimensions it will bring to the legendary journey of the Avatars. Keep up with the exciting continuation of the story on Paramount+.
