The journey of a massive video game project is rarely a straight line, often morphing into something far more interesting than the initial blueprint. This is the story of how the vision for Cyberpunk 2 has evolved beyond its initial conception, driven not just by artistic ambition but by a radical philosophy on team empowerment.

Gabe Amatangelo, a key figure at CD Projekt Red, shares insights into this evolution, highlighting a belief that true creativity flourishes when leadership trusts the collective genius of the team. Rather than acting as a bottleneck for every decision, Amatangelo favors empowering the individuals and teams building the world of the game.

“I had the idea of Cyberpunk 2 in the beginning, but it evolves as I involve more people,” he explains. “It evolves as I empower the team and individuals within them to contribute. It becomes something else, right? It becomes this thing that I’ve shepherded, but it’s ultimately a reflection of the team’s hearts and souls.”

This approach extends to defining the genre itself. For Amatangelo, the essence of cyberpunk is rooted in a spirit of inquiry. Drawing from his own background in punk music, he posits that the genre is defined by the ability to question the status quo.

“The core is the ability to pose questions — to ask why,” he states. He notes that the cyber elements are a powerful expression, encompassing both exaggeration and expression, much like the neon lights and loud noises that define the aesthetic. It is an exploration of the extremes of dehumanization.

This open mindset requires embracing diverse perspectives. Amatangelo encourages the team to listen to what others think cyberpunk represents, knowing that this exchange helps push forward new ideas and figure out the next creative step.

“There were a lot of people saying, ‘Oh, cyberpunk means this,’ and ‘Cyberpunk means that,'” he reflects. “I said, ‘Yes! You’re all right and you’re all wrong!’ Just as with punk, different people find different meanings, but the fundamental element is the capacity to question things.”

While the future release date for Cyberpunk 2 remains unannounced, the project is clearly moving forward with impressive momentum. With over 180 developers involved, the pace of creation is robust, suggesting the game is on track to reach its audience.

The studio’s capacity for large-scale world-building is further evidenced by their recent colossal undertaking, Project Hadar, which is now complete, cementing CD Projekt Red’s reputation as a powerhouse capable of delivering epic, finished worlds.
