Finding the Soul of Cyberpunk: How CDPR is Redefining the World in Film

When a titan of gaming like Cyberpunk 2077 enters the realm of live-action cinema, the pressure to deliver a perfect adaptation is immense. But this time, CD Projekt Red has taken a fascinating, unconventional route, signaling that they are prioritizing the spirit of the universe over a simple translation of the game’s narrative.

“We definitely don’t want to make a film adaptation of the game,” co-CEO Michał Nowakowski stated, setting a clear boundary for the creative process. Instead of rehashing the story of V, the mercenary haunted by Johnny Silverhand, the studio intends to tell a fresh story set within the rich world of Cyberpunk.

This shift signals an exciting opportunity for filmmakers. By focusing on the expansive setting rather than a strict one-to-one translation, CDPR is tapping into the boundless potential of the Cyberpunk universe—a landscape teeming with complex themes of identity, autonomy, and the self as a constantly modifiable entity.

The universe, built by tabletop RPG designer Mike Pondsmith, is not just a backdrop; it is fertile soil for countless original narratives. This approach aligns perfectly with the creative direction seen in other multimedia endeavors the studio has pursued, notably their successful anime adaptation, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.

Just as Cyberpunk: Edgerunners brought a vivid, fresh perspective to the dystopian posthuman hellscape, the new cinematic venture aims to explore those themes through new characters and new stories, allowing the world to breathe and evolve.

The project is being developed in partnership with Paramount, operating under the Skydance banner, a powerful creative alliance that brings together established industry weight. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, known for his work on films like Transformers, is slated to produce the project, lending credibility and high production standards to the vision.

While the expectation remains high, the studio’s decision emphasizes creative freedom. It opens the door for an interpretation that honors the grit and depth of the Cyberpunk setting while forging entirely new dramatic paths. It reminds us that sometimes, the greatest stories are found not in imitation, but in limitless imagination.

Meanwhile, the broader CD Project Land portfolio continues to thrive. Work is actively underway on Project Hadar, their first game set in an entirely original universe. Alongside this ambition, the legacy of Cyberpunk 2 continues to evolve, and other titles like The Witcher 3 remaster have demonstrated the studio’s commitment to polishing world-class experiences.
