The universe of Star Wars has a new, melancholy footnote: a rumored action RPG that promised to deliver cross-platform adventure, only to vanish into the ether just over a year after its existence was hinted at.

Internal reports suggest the game was tentatively titled Star Wars: Magellan. It was a project born from the collaboration between the developers at Echtra Games and Zynga, a studio that had previously been owned by the gaming giant.

During its time under Zynga’s ownership, the team was reportedly working on a new role-playing game intended for cross-platform play, leveraging the expertise of Zynga’s NaturalMotion studio. The promise was an ambitious multiplayer ARPG experience, set to see players shoot, loot, and explore the galaxy.

This potential title was slated for development across major platforms, including PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, before the studio was shut down last June, leaving the project abruptly canceled.

Yet, amidst the sudden closure, a glimpse of what might have been has resurfaced. Footage, reportedly uncovered from a former Echtra developer’s portfolio, offers a tantalizing look at the game’s potential. The visuals showcased third-person action gameplay, complete with dynamic character animations and models.

The footage depicted a dynamic clash between two distinct playable characters. One navigated the galaxy as a Jedi, wielding the Force and impressive Lightsaber maneuvers, while the other commanded the skills of a Mandalorian, utilizing jetpacks and weaponry. The design promised a rich combat system built around unique abilities and skills.

Beyond the action, the development plans included an engaging feature where players could bond with non-player characters, fostering meaningful relationships with the characters as they progressed the story. It was shaping up to be more than just a shooter; it aimed to be a narrative-driven experience.

While the possibility of the game remains firmly in the realm of ‘what if,’ the existence of the footage serves as a reminder of the countless epic projects that get shelved. For fans of Star Wars, the cancellation is a poignant reminder that even the most exciting futures can fade, leaving behind only the wistful hope for what might have been.
