Hardware Market Precarious After Xbox and PS5 Sales Slumps
The gaming hardware landscape is currently facing some serious headwinds. For those tracking the industry, the situation is less than optimistic, prompting some analysts to draw a stark comparison to a much earlier era.
Mat Piscatella, an analyst with the firm Circana, recently weighed in on these market shifts, delivering a sobering assessment of the current state of console sales. Piscatella stated that the hardware situation is “Not been in a more precarious position since the early 80s.”
This commentary highlights a significant downturn in unit sales across the major gaming platforms. Data reviewed at the end of last week indicated that both Xbox and PlayStation sales have experienced notable declines.
Specifically, Xbox hardware unit sales saw a dramatic drop of 33% in 2026 (covering the period up to August) when compared to the same timeframe in 2025. Meanwhile, PlayStation sales were also down by 25%.
These figures suggest that the market, following the earlier sales slumps experienced with the Xbox and PS5 generations, is grappling with slower consumer adoption of new hardware. The current environment paints a rather bleak picture for the gaming industry as a whole, suggesting that momentum is stalling.
