How Nintendo secretly revealed Zelda at E3 (“We popped off”)
The world of video game development often thrives on hype, but sometimes, the most compelling stories are those that unfold in complete secrecy. The transition from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild to its successor, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, was not just a creative endeavor; it was a masterclass in corporate secrecy.
Inside Nintendo’s corridors, the development of the sequel was perhaps the most tightly guarded secret the company had ever managed. The information surrounding the open-world adventure was shielded so closely that the vast majority of employees only discovered its existence alongside the fanbase.
For those who worked behind the scenes, the reveal felt less like a public announcement and more like an elaborate, high-stakes operation. Kit Ellis, an ex-marketing and PR lead for Nintendo of America, recalls the level of security was unprecedented. He noted that fewer than ten people were truly privy to the game’s existence before its shadowy trailer dropped during the E3 2019 Nintendo Direct.
“I had to do all of these teams’ jobs in secret, and when this reveal happens, feed them this thing and tell them what to do with it,” Ellis shared. He elaborated that managing communication required extreme discretion, even having to create necessary content for teams like social media while keeping the wider organization in the dark.
This intense need for secrecy extended to many employees. Krysta Yang, a senior manager overseeing creator relations and original content, only found out about the sequel during the live Direct stream itself. While she had seen the presentation beforehand, the moment the trailer appeared was a complete surprise.
“We popped off,” Yang laughed, recalling her reaction. She remarked that this was the first time she had experienced such a major surprise at Nintendo in all of her twelve years with the company, highlighting how rarely such information is intentionally withheld from staff so close to a project’s conclusion.
Nintendo’s approach ensured that even internal presentations were carefully managed. Before E3, the official version shown to the press was meticulously prepared, missing that final, tantalizing moment of surprise that employees experienced live.
It is no surprise that such a follow-up generated intense anticipation. Breath of the Wild fundamentally redefined open-world gaming and ushered in the Switch era, setting an incredibly high bar for innovation. The subsequent game carried massive hype because it promised to build upon that groundbreaking foundation.
