Martin’s blog update reveals no Winds of Winter news yet
Even the maestro of Westeros, George R.R. Martin, is currently navigating a creative landscape filled with long waits and personal reflection. Despite his monumental status as the creator of Game of Thrones, updates from the author have become increasingly rare, offering fans more ambiguity than concrete dates.
When Martin did finally share an update on his Not a Blog recently, it was a sign of something deeper. He admitted that the year had been “stressful,” noting that he had experienced significant personal struggles, including battling sadness and depression, and even mentioned losing friends during this period of intense creative focus.
This introspection added another layer to the saga. Earlier in the year, Martin candidly addressed his relationship with Game of Thrones showrunner Ryan Condal, describing it as “abysmal” and stating that the series was “not my story any longer”—a clear sign that the pressures of storytelling have taken a heavy toll.
Yet, amidst the reflections on personal struggle, Martin remains deeply engaged with his other projects. He continues to pour energy into adapting the world for the screen, notably as a co-creator of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. His blog posts often celebrate the show’s success, highlighting its nine Emmy nominations, though he remains optimistic that future awards are on the horizon.
The adaptation work is also moving forward across the board. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 is nearing completion, with filming recently wrapping up.
Beyond screen adaptations, Martin continues to feed his creative hunger by working on new material. Co-creator Ira Parker has indicated that Martin is currently penning a fourth Dunk and Egg novella, adding further depth to the sprawling mythology.
Furthermore, the epic world is finding new life through stage and screen. A new Game of Thrones play, The Mad King, is currently in previews in the UK. This new venture signals that the story continues to evolve, even outside of the original book structure.
As for the most anticipated chapter in the main saga, House of the Dragon season 3 finale is scheduled to release on HBO Max in the US on August 9, and on Sky and NOW in the UK on August 10. While fans eagerly await these developments, Martin himself remains focused on his ongoing creative pursuits.
