Why every popular game gets collab offers
The Wild West of Game Collaboration: Why Palworld‘s Success Attracted a Flood of Suitors
As Palworld continues to dominate the gaming landscape, drawing staggering revenue—totaling $700 million since 2024—it has become a magnet for ambitious collaborations. But behind the hype and the massive financial success lies a wild west of creative pitches, many of which simply don’t make it past the quality control gate.
Pocketpair’s publishing lead, John “Bucky” Buckley, offers a candid look into this creative deluge. He explains that while the game is surrounded by suitors, the reality is that most collaboration proposals are destined to fail, simply because they fail to align with the core ethos of the survival game.
In a recent exchange on the official Discord server, Buckley admitted that fans often underestimate the sheer volume of pitches the team rejects or scraps. He suggests that this isn’t unique to Palworld; nearly every mega-popular game is constantly bombarded with collaboration offers.
When asked about the nature of the rejected ideas—imagining something outlandish like a crossover with Mr. Clean—Buckley’s response highlights the playful yet pragmatic nature of development. He confirms that while the suggestions are varied, the ultimate decision always hinges on whether the concept truly meshes with the game’s foundational structure.
The team has, of course, managed some unexpected successes. For instance, the development of the Ultrakill crossover was instigated by Palworld, as the game’s weapon designer was a huge fan of the fast-paced FPS. Buckley noted that such organic connections are often the most satisfying, stating that in that case, the collaboration felt “really as shrimple as that.”
Despite the stream of unsolicited offers, Pocketpair remains discerning. They have indicated a clear preference for working with games that share a similar survival DNA, such as No Man’s Sky and Ark. However, this selectivity also means some more obviously disparate ideas, like a Five Nights at Palworld scenario or even a tie-in to The Elder Scrolls 7, are firmly off the table.
This careful approach underscores the maturity of the development team. While the fanbase is eager for every possible crossover, the developers are prioritizing quality and consistency over chasing every fleeting trend, ensuring that the next big move for Palworld remains rooted in the world they have already built.
