The post-apocalyptic world of Metro has always existed at the bleeding edge of gaming, pushing hardware to its limits while delivering a visceral, unforgettable experience. Now, as the franchise gears up for its next major chapter, developer 4A Games is delivering a significant promise: next-generation updates for its foundational titles, aiming to bring the legacy of Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light up to the modern generation of consoles and PCs.

While the original games were celebrated as technical showcases, they haven’t exactly aged gracefully. Despite an initial remaster released back in 2014, these titles often struggle to run smoothly on modern hardware, necessitating constant tinkering for players looking to experience them on contemporary systems. Fans have long hoped for performance enhancements that would modernize the experience without fundamentally altering the atmospheric grit that defines the series.

The incoming updates are designed to address these performance hurdles, promising long-needed bug fixes and significant stability improvements. The technical roadmap for these enhancements will vary depending on the platform, ensuring optimized performance whether you are on a console or a high-end PC.

For console players, the goal is high fidelity and smooth frame rates. On the PS5 and Xbox Series X, the Metro games will achieve either native 4K at 60 fps or upscaled 4K at 120 fps. This will be supported by various upscaling technologies, including PSSR on the PS5 Pro, or traditional temporal upscaling on the Xbox consoles.

The experience shifts slightly for PC gamers. Recognizing the power of dedicated hardware, the updates will finally bring DLSS”>DLSS support to the games, alongside a host of unnamed quality-of-life improvements that streamline the gameplay experience. For long-time PC enthusiasts, this means the possibility of running the Metro universe at high settings with greater stability than ever before.

While the specifics remain under wraps, 4A Games has committed to sharing full patch notes ahead of the October 22 release on PC and the October 29 release on consoles. The focus is clearly on making these beloved worlds more accessible, ensuring that the technical mastery displayed by the franchise remains front and center.

Meanwhile, the franchise is already looking toward the future with Metro 2039, set to launch on February 4, 2027. Hands-on previews of this upcoming title have already shown an incredible and brutal post-apocalyptic shooter, perfectly capturing the spirit of the series. Although launching amidst ongoing hardware challenges, the vision remains clear: to create a scalable and stunning Metro experience that continues to push the boundaries of what gaming can achieve.
