The fate of Gotham’s most brooding vigilante hangs in the balance. Robert Pattinson, currently deep in the trenches of filming The Batman 2, has offered a candid perspective on his place in the evolving DC cinematic universe. While fans dream of seeing the Caped Crusader reborn in the new DCU, Pattinson is holding firm: his particular iteration of Batman belongs in a world distinct from the main continuity.

“It would be kind of tough to have this version of Bruce outside of [Matt Reeves’] world,” Pattinson admitted. He explained that the intense mood and visual style of his character demand a specific, contained reality. For him, this particular Batman exists in a world that demands a certain tone, and shifting him into the broader DC landscape would be a monumental artistic move.

The process of creating this character, Pattinson shared, was an intensely immersive experience. He recounted how being in the dark for months, experiencing the mood and lighting of the project, felt profoundly strange and affecting. It is this unique, deeply felt environment that shapes his vision of Gotham.

Despite this personal artistic preference, the larger DC universe is in motion. The relaunched DCU, spearheaded by James Gunn and Peter Safran, is actively developing its roadmap, though the official casting of Batman remains yet to come. While the overarching concept of Batman is present in the new structure, the actor hasn’t been officially attached to the new timeline.

Pattinson’s current Batman exists in the DC’s Elseworlds—stories that stand apart from the official canon. This separation highlights how much creative autonomy exists within the larger DC framework. James Gunn has acknowledged the potential of integrating the character, but he is currently navigating a period where everything is in flux, suggesting that the timeline for bringing Pattinson’s Batman fully into the DCU is still being determined.

Meanwhile, other DC projects are also moving forward. The DCU is currently seeing various pieces in development, including Clayface hitting theaters, and the anticipation building for Lanterns nearing their conclusion. Additionally, the exciting Man of Tomorrow is slated to arrive next year, ensuring that the DC cinematic landscape remains vibrant and full of exciting developments for fans to follow.
