Sony skips PS5 logo reveal at convention for the first time in 60 years
Sony Hits Pause Button on Consumer Electronics Show, Prioritizing Creator Content
In a move that signals a significant shift in strategy, Sony is skipping the Consumer Electronics Show in 2027, marking the first time the PlayStation maker will not attend the event since its inaugural appearance in 1967. This decision underscores a pivot away from broad consumer hardware showcases toward a laser focus on the intellectual property and creator-focused technologies that drive the gaming world.
While the Consumer Electronics Show typically serves as the grand stage for new technology reveals, Sony’s decision is rooted in a more specialized business focus. A Sony spokesperson explained that the choice is driven by the company’s current priorities: “We continuously and strategically evaluate our approach to events and communications based on the needs and priorities of our diverse business,” emphasizing a commitment to “entertainment, intellectual property, and technology geared to support creators.”
Although CES is a major venue for consumer electronics, the relevance of the show to PlayStation is historically deep. Since its inception, Sony has been an integral part of the event, hosting landmark announcements that defined gaming history. From the 1991 unveiling of the SNES PlayStation—which predated competitors’ announcements—to the 2020 reveal of the PS5 logo and the 2022 introduction of the PSVR2 and Horizon: Call of the Mountain, Sony has been a fixture at these industry events for decades.
Yet, in recent years, the company has begun scaling back its presence at general consumer tech expos. This trend is further evidenced by the company’s limited presence at events like Gamescom—the world’s largest gaming convention—since 2019, while competitors like Xbox and Nintendo have maintained a near-constant presence at these gatherings.
This strategic distancing suggests that Sony is choosing to direct its attention and resources toward platforms that resonate most strongly with its audience. The massive viewership drawn by PlayStation State of Play and PlayStation Showcase streams, which draw millions of viewers, demonstrate that the most impactful hardware announcements and feature deep dives are increasingly happening on these dedicated platforms rather than large, general consumer expos.
Instead of relying on a single, massive consumer event, Sony appears to be prioritizing the ecosystems and communities built around its intellectual property. This approach allows the company to focus its energy on nurturing the content and technology that supports the creative talent driving the gaming industry, ensuring that the focus remains squarely on the experience rather than just the hardware.
