Valve ditches Index headsets for Steam Frame VR

Valve is making a clean break from its legacy in virtual reality, officially discontinuing the Valve Index VR kit. To clear out any lingering stock, the company is offering a 20% off sale on the headset and controllers.

This decision seems less like a sudden pivot and more like an inevitable response to the evolving landscape of VR hardware. The market has clearly shifted, largely thanks to the introduction of newer, more versatile options, most notably the Steam Frame.

The Frame, while popular, brought its own set of complications. Valve had made the difficult decision to cut down some of the Frame’s specifications to avoid memory-shortage-induced price hikes, yet the demand remained incredibly strong. This situation led to a waiting list that now stretches all the way into 2027, suggesting that the newer entry point has become highly coveted.

When looking at the economics of the situation, the Valve Index kit presents a unique challenge. To get the full experience, customers need not only the headset and controllers but also two separate HTC-made base stations. This configuration totals a hefty £1,027.

For context, this price point is surprisingly steep. It exceeds the original launch price of the full Index kit, which debuted at £919. It highlights how the cost of VR hardware has ballooned, often outpacing the novelty of the technology itself.

Ultimately, the discontinuation and sale signal a streamlining of Valve’s focus, moving away from a complex, multi-component system toward future-focused offerings. It’s a clear move to refresh the hardware lineup and ensure that the next generation of VR experiences can thrive without the baggage of older, complex packages.
