From Bunny Masks to Battlegrounds: Ben Affleck Reveals His Gaming Roots

When the conversation turns to the inspiration behind cinematic costumes, star Ben Affleck brought a surprisingly digital perspective to the discussion, revealing that his foray into gaming—specifically Fortnite—played a role in shaping some of the looks in his latest film, Animals.

Speaking on the New Heights podcast, Affleck pointed to the game as a source of inspiration for a fuzzy bunny mask worn by a character in the film. He explained that his son was deeply engrossed in the world of gaming and collecting skins, which led him to draw inspiration from the aesthetic of Fortnite.

Affleck admitted that he didn’t fully grasp the specific appeal of the costumes, noting that he based the designs on the idea that the character was getting them from a game. “I thought these costumes are so kind of random and unusual, that’s what I based the costumes on,” he shared. “I thought he’d be getting them off games.”

Beyond costume design, the actor shared a broader view of his own gaming habits. He enjoys a variety of titles, ranging from sports games like Madden and 2K to first-person shooters. While he joked about his proficiency in competitive gaming, he tempered his confidence by acknowledging the skill gap between himself and younger players.

The humor, however, came out when Affleck reflected on his competitive experience in shooter games. He painted a vivid picture of his interactions with younger players, recounting moments of playful but spirited disagreement. He quipped about the frustrations of competition, noting how often he would engage in spirited verbal exchanges over the perceived skill level.

“I always play games,” Affleck stated, describing his experience with first-person shooters. “I think I’m good, and then 12-year-olds just fk you up. I try to come out and I’m like, ‘Here I come.’ I get killed right away, and then they taunt you, like, ‘You suck. fk you!’ I end up getting in arguments. ‘fk you! I don’t suck! I’m a grown man!’”

This love for competitive gaming extends beyond casual play. Affleck has been vocal about his passion for titles like Valorant, even involving his son in the competitive scene. He has attended various Valorant events with his son and participated in the e-sports community, including joining the Sentinels team for a watch party last year, demonstrating a commitment that bridges acting and competitive digital culture.
