The video game industry is currently navigating a choppy waters, and for veterans like Kurt Kuhlmann, the instability is hitting hard. Kuhlmann, a legendary figure in the world of role-playing games, brings a wealth of experience but is currently navigating a market defined by recent, relentless restructuring.

A true master of the Elder Scrolls lore, Kuhlmann’s career spans some of the most iconic titles, including the original Oblivion and Skyrim. He spent the majority of his career at Bethesda Game Studios, contributing to virtually every facet of game design—from narrative writing and world-building to combat balance, character systems, and gameplay scripting.

Despite building an impressive career, Kuhlmann has recently transitioned out of the large studio environment. He left Bethesda, citing a desire to move past what he felt was the internal bureaucracy and broken promises surrounding future projects, including leadership roles in The Elder Scrolls 6. This decision reflected a desire for a different professional direction.

After leaving Bethesda, Kuhlmann found new opportunities, taking on a principal world designer role at AAA studio Lightspeed LA. However, even this position was not immune to the industry-wide shifts. Earlier this summer, a wave of layoffs swept through the sector, leading to the loss of his role.

It is a sobering reality for many in the development field. As Kuhlmann points out, the entire industry is grappling with uncertainty. The ongoing wave of layoffs at major companies, including Microsoft’s restructuring plans at Xbox, underscores that even established roles are vulnerable.

Facing this market reality, Kuhlmann is actively seeking his next challenge. He is focusing on roles that allow for remote work but remains open to any opportunity that truly matches his extensive background in design and leadership.

His perspective offers a vital lens into the current climate: while the passion for making games remains strong, the foundation of the industry itself is proving to be inherently unstable. For seasoned developers, the message is clear—adaptability and skill are paramount as the landscape continues to evolve.
