Fable combat stays approachable in the new RPG
When developing a sprawling role-playing game, striking the right balance between thrilling action and deep narrative is a delicate art. That is the philosophy driving the combat system for the upcoming Fable title, where developers aim to honor the legacy of the series while introducing fresh layers of mechanical depth.
Associate director Will Kennedy explained that a core consideration in designing the combat was ensuring it remained approachable. The goal was to maintain the accessible feel of the original Fable games, avoiding the extreme difficulty of titles like Dark Souls-style brawls. However, this approachability does not mean sacrificing complexity; the developers have managed to weave intricate mechanics beneath the surface of the action.
This hidden complexity manifests in fascinating ways. For instance, simple actions carry surprising consequences. Arrows, for example, can be aimed at specific body parts. Hitting the leg of an undead Hollow enemy causes them to stumble and crawl toward the player. If a player manages to decapitate such an enemy, the result is equally dramatic: the target is left firing wildly in every direction.
The system also thrives on creative interactions with spells and enemies. The ‘Befowl’ spell, which typically turns foes into chickens, behaves uniquely against specific enemies. Kennedy noted that this transformation changes based on the target, turning them into undead chickens, and further complicating matters when a player uses a ‘Fireball’ on a chicken, resulting in a roast chicken. These small details add unexpected layers of depth and encourage experimentation.
Beyond the swordplay and spellcasting, the team prioritized making the overarching experience about storytelling rather than constant fighting. Developers recognized that not every challenge needs to be solved through combat. Much of the narrative progression will rely on dialogue choices, managing the game’s reputation system, and engaging in broader exploration.
The focus shifted to creating a harmonious tapestry where varied activities—puzzles, exploration, and conversation—all converge to tell a cohesive story. This commitment to variety ensures that the gameplay offers diverse avenues for interaction, allowing players to feel truly involved in the world of Fable, whether they are battling foes or uncovering a hidden secret.
