Assassin’s Creed Veteran Eric Baptizat Returns to Lead the Franchise

A celebrated figure in the Assassin’s Creed universe is back at Ubisoft, stepping into the role of Game Director for the series. Eric Baptizat, a veteran known for his pivotal contributions to the franchise’s history and design, is set to guide the creative direction moving forward.

Baptizat’s return marks a significant moment for the brand, bringing decades of experience and deep familiarity with the Assassin’s Creed world directly to the helm. His professional journey includes almost sixteen full years at Ubisoft, during which he was instrumental in leading design roles on iconic titles such as Black Flag and Valhalla, as well as key roles on Assassin’s Creed: Origins and Unity.

Before this move, Baptizat further honed his skills at Electronic Arts’ Motive Studio, where he took on leadership roles for major titles including the highly acclaimed Dead Space remake and Battlefield 6, demonstrating a versatile grasp of large-scale game development.

The announcement solidifies his status as a trusted voice within the franchise. Jean Guesdon, the head of content for the Assassin’s Creed series, expressed immense confidence in bringing Baptizat back to lead the creative direction. “Éric needs no introduction in this universe,” Guesdon stated, acknowledging that Baptizat’s passion and rigor align perfectly with the vision for the brand’s future.

This decision comes at a particularly interesting time for Ubisoft. The company has recently navigated a period of significant change, including a major strategic shift intended to smooth out operations and accelerate growth. This reset involved canceling several projects and restructuring production into specialized creative houses, such as Vantage Studios, which is now focused on developing multiple franchises, including Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry.

With the goal of ensuring future titles maintain momentum, Baptizat’s expertise is viewed as a vital asset. The hope is that his collaborative spirit and profound understanding of gameplay craft will help steer upcoming projects—including Assassin’s Creed Hexe, Jade, and Invictus—through the development process successfully.

The franchise has always relied on talent that understands both the lore and the mechanics of its world. Baptizat’s deep connection to the Assassin’s Creed legacy makes him an ideal candidate to help navigate Ubisoft’s exciting new direction, promising a fresh chapter for the series.
