Naughty Dog’s Last of Us Online work cancelled
When a massive studio decides to cut a project, it often seems like a simple business decision. But behind the scenes at Naughty Dog, the story of the canceled online multiplayer venture reveals something far more interesting: what the majority of the team was actually focused on.
Naughty Dog‘s standalone online multiplayer game, which was officially canceled in late 2023, was a project that consumed the attention of the vast majority of the studio before it was shelved.
This focus on the multiplayer concept suggested that the ambition extended beyond typical contracted work, hinting at a deep desire within the development team to explore new interactive horizons.
The shift in focus, however, doesn’t mean the ideas disappeared. In a recent video appearance, Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier made a compelling revelation about the studio’s trajectory.
Schreier indicated that the anticipated sequel to the game, Factions, was not merely a side hustle. Instead, the development of the sequel had captured the attention and dedication of most of the California-based team at Naughty Dog.
This insight suggests that while external priorities—like the cancellation of the multiplayer project—may change project portfolios, the core creative energy of the team often flows toward ambitious, passion-driven concepts. It paints a picture of a studio driven by internal vision rather than external demands.
