In a move that sends ripples of sadness through the fighting game community, the active development of Riot Games’ fighting title, 2XKO, will officially conclude in December.

While the news may have been foreshadowed for some time, the official announcement hit the community with the force of a sudden shift. The team behind 2XKO openly shared their reasons, admitting that the game simply did not have the sustained player base necessary to justify continued development.

“Over the last few months, we’ve been monitoring 2XKO’s trajectory closely, and what we’ve seen is painting a clear, consistent picture: while a lot of you jumped in to try the game and there’s an incredible community that plays every day, we haven’t seen enough players stick with the game to get to a path toward sustainability,” the team explained.

This decision marks a significant turning point for the title, setting the stage for a shift in how 2XKO will evolve. While active development is ending, the game will not disappear overnight. Servers will remain online well beyond 2026, ensuring that offline play remains completely unaffected.

The team is committed to supporting players through this transition. In October, players will receive the final content patch, and the team plans to introduce final feature improvements, including two new champions for Lux and Samira, along with a final bug fix in December.

To streamline the experience and focus resources, several systems will be removed. This includes the discontinuation of systems like Battle Passes, KO Points, Champion Tokens, seasons, and events. Furthermore, ranked lobbies will be disabled to create a more casual environment, allowing players to matchmake within a single server pool while maintaining skill-based matchmaking in casual lobbies.

For the in-game economy, Riot will be rolling out changes designed to offer greater value and accessibility. KO Points purchases will be disabled, and a new purchasable bundle of nearly all 2XKO cosmetic content will be available for $39.99. Most items will also be made available for Credits, and most gameplay content, including all champions, will be unlocked for players.

Despite the changes to active development, the competitive side of the game remains intact. The 2XKO Competitive Series will run through the end of 2026, with Riot continuing to support tournament organizers by providing prizeing for Major and Challenger events. After 2026, tournament organizers will be free to run both offline and online events using their own community competition guidelines.

The decision, though logical from a business standpoint, has drawn a strong reaction from the fighting game community. Fans have expressed deep disappointment, feeling that Riot is abandoning a game they love. Some felt the move reflected a prioritization of titles with larger metrics, leading to frustration among those who felt the game was being sidelined.
