GTA 6 Preorders Hit $400 Million+ Already
The anticipation surrounding Grand Theft Auto 6 has translated into staggering financial success, setting new benchmarks for the video game industry. Even before the first frame of the game is released, the preorder numbers have generated more than $400 million in revenue.
The scale of the demand is evident when tracking the sales data. As of August 18th, the game had sold 4.38 million copies, including returns, bringing in $429 million. This massive digital footprint shows a clear preference for current-generation hardware, with the sales mix heavily favoring the PS5 at 77 percent, followed by the Xbox Series X|S at 23 percent.
Preorders kicked off on June 25th for the standard edition at $80 and the Ultimate Edition at $100. While official figures remain guarded by the developers, Take-Two owner Rockstar noted that the preorder numbers are unprecedented in the video game industry.
The enthusiasm has continued to grow, with the $100 Ultimate Edition proving particularly popular among potential buyers. Industry analysts predict this momentum will only accelerate, suggesting that the majority of preorders are expected to occur in the final week leading up to the game’s launch.
Some projections put the potential revenue even higher. Experts estimate that if GTA 6 achieves 25 million preorders, the revenue could approach $2 billion. This figure would be enough to fully cover the game’s development budget and the vast marketing campaigns required to launch it successfully.
Despite the massive pre-launch activity, the release timeline involved several delays. The game finally landed on November 19th for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. While the standard edition was priced at $80, some speculation suggested it could have commanded an even higher price, reflecting the game’s immense popularity.
This success places the launch in stark contrast to past titles. For context, when Grand Theft Auto 5 launched in 2013 at $60, that price point is roughly equivalent to about $85 today when factoring in inflation, underscoring how much the gaming landscape and user expectations have evolved.
The official marketing journey is set to begin with a highly anticipated August 27th trailer released on Netflix, promising fans a deep dive into the world of GTA 6.
